The Move

Posted in AtHome by Rami on the February 28th, 2005

We have finally moved! It was just soooo tiring. The last time I moved
was when I came back from the states after 6 years of being there. I
came to kuwait with 31 boxes filled with computers, computer
accessories, electronics, wires, books and clothes. This time it was 30
boxes with just books, computer accessories, wires, clothes, and some
other junk that I really don’t remember what. I carried the computers
and electronics by hand but for the rest I had a company come and carry
them for KD30. I would’ve really died if I had needed to move everything by
myself. Even with all the help I got from the wife and my family I still
went up and down the stairs probably 50 times. Man I really wish I can
afford buying a house NOW so I wouldn’t ever need to move again. The
worst part is I still have a LOT of work to do to settle down even with
the pain I went through this past long weekend.

Long Day and More To Come

Posted in AtWherever by Rami on the February 25th, 2005

What a long day today was! First I went to work and it wasn’t that bad
except that I found out that one of my favorite managers (not mine) is
quiting and going to MTC instead, which is a total lose for our company.
Then I went home took a nap and my long day started. Got a call from
Midas as they were delivering our audio tower, TV table, and computer
chair. Went to our apartment and it turned out that the chair they
delivered had like a hole in the sponge or something. I let the guy
finish putting up our furniture together then I called the showroom to
have the problem solved, which they did without any problems but now I
will have to wait till sunday for them to exchange the chair. We went to
AlGhanim Electronics after that where we bought a wet/dry vacuum
cleaner, a small rechargeable vacuum, a toaster, water filter, an alarm
clock, a 5000W voltage regulator, and a safe. I was afraid that the
stuff wouldn’t fit in my car but thanks god they did except for the safe
where they are going to deliver on sunday. After that we went to sultan
center. Since the apartment has just been built, it needs cleaning badly
from all the dust. We bought all the cleaning stuff we were able to find
and we were so disappointed as we were thinking that we will find
everything at sultan center salmiya but instead we now have to pass
Mishref Co-op early in the morning to get the rest of the stuff we
couldn’t find. Tomorrow will be a longer day as we have to clean the
apartment AND pack ALL our stuff to have ready for the move on saturday.

Mac mini Compliment

Posted in AtWork by Rami on the February 23rd, 2005

I had to take my Mac mini with me to work today since I didn’t have the
time to mess with it much yesterday. It’s so tiny that I would just need
to BMODKM. Anyhow, while waiting for the elevator in my building to go
up to my office, a lady saw me carrying the box and she was like "What’s
this?" I miss understood her and said "A computer." she was like "I know I
have a computer but this one is small!" I’m like "Yeah it’s new." She
then asked about the price and was like "Allah yihaneek." said thanks and
got on the elevator.

Netscreen 5XP Default Factory Reset

Posted in TechNotes by Rami on the February 23rd, 2005

Was messing with this for like 15 minutes to get it right. To reset a
Netscreen 5xp to the default configuration connect to the console and
press the reset button with a paper clip for 4-6 seconds. When it says
that it is waiting for a 2nd push remove the clip, wait for 1-2 seconds
then press the button again till it resets.

My New Mac mini

Posted in AtHome by Rami on the February 23rd, 2005

Ok just got my new Mac mini. It’s awesome… I think… I’m not really
sure what’s so awesome about it as I can hardly use it. I’m new to mac
and it’s like I’m trying to speak a foreign language or something. I
should just run the terminal and stay there since it’s the only place I
know what is kinda going on. BUT it is awesome to just have a mac and
"Think Different" :o) Oh and Mark, I will post pictures tomorrow…
Hopefully…

Update: Here are the pictures

Furnishing SUCKS

Posted in AtWherever by Rami on the February 22nd, 2005

I can’t wait till I finish and furnish our new apartment. We just have
one bedroom, one bathroom, one kitchen, and one living room but it is
taking us ages to just furnish this thing. We can’t seem to find
anything we like and when we do, the displayed item is the last piece.
Since we don’t have much room we had to either decide whether I get to
have a computer desk in the living room OR get a dining table and put my
computer stuff on half of it. We decided to go with the later especially
since I don’t really care as long as it’s a place where I could put my
puters on. Anyhow, we went to a few places and finally found the perfect
one at Home Center. It was in our price range which was KD200 and it had
8 chairs. Also, it was 1.5m by 1.5m so it’s perfect as I would get 1.5m
by 0.75m. We go to other places in Farwaniya as well to look some more
and then decide to go ahead and buy the table. We also needed an audio
tower for my electronic equipments so we go to Midas and buy a matching
audio tower that we have seen before. We go back to Home Center and my
wife asks the guy whether they have it in stock and the guy says yes. We
go to pay for it and at the counter after waiting for frigging 15 minutes
the guy on the counter tells us that the display is the last piece. It
was all scratched up and he was like I’ll give you %15 off on it. Man
that pissed me off especially I had my new Mac mini at home waiting for
me and I’m wasting my time there. Lesson learned: make sure the item is
in stock before going and buying another matching item.

Quest For A Desk

Posted in AtWherever by Rami on the February 21st, 2005

I’m going to be moving soon to a new apartment and so I’m getting new
furniture. I almost got everything I wanted but still missing the most
important piece; the computer desk. I haven’t found the perfect one yet
and don’t know where to start looking but I went to Midas, Ikea, and The
One but still haven’t found the perfect one yet. I’m going to Farwaniya
tomorrow to look further and hope I found one soon as I am moving
hopefully this weekend.

All Day On WP

Posted in AtWork by Rami on the February 20th, 2005

Today was not productive at all either. I spent it all trying to
customize WP the way I want it. I guess that since the management cut my
vacation and called me back to work, I stopped feeling like working. I’m
currently the only unix sysadmin at the company and been the only one
since last June. I wish I can find a backup for me at work so I can take
a real vacation as I haven’t gotten a "real" one for the past 28 months.

Backups

Posted in AtHome by Rami on the February 20th, 2005

I have been backing up my stuff onto tapes since 2001 but lately I’ve
been so busy that after one of my VXA-1 drives failed 3 weeks ago I just
turned off my backup machine and didn’t try to fix it up until today.
After debuging the problem for more than an hour it turned out that it
was caused from the drive’s external case. I wanted for the longest time
to just take the drives out and install them internally into the
machine’s case and so I finally did that today.

My First Post

Posted in AtWork by Rami on the February 19th, 2005

I came to work at 12:15pm and was late because I went to 7usainiya as it’s 3ashoora today. I didn’t do much work for my job but instead I worked on 6rb’s latest program for generating static html pages instead of depending on mysql for the content. The load on 6rb’s servers is increasing and the bandwidth usage is getting to 100Mbps so I have to do something about it quickly without getting more servers. My main work today was done using php and I didn’t learn anything.
